Long Vacation

Finally finding time for personal work again. Wanted to do something loose and colorful. I planned on an old lady but she turned into an old man. Got some art supplies for the holidays i was excited to try out!

Beaver Mascot

This was a freelance assignment in which I was tasked with designing a beaver mascot for a local newspaper. He will hopefully be redrawn in the future in various poses. I tried to keep the forms simple in anticipation of that.

Back to personal work now! This guy started as a pen sketch that I scanned and then colored in photoshop. Tried some new shading techniques, I wrestled over putting other characters or foreground elements in the composition but I settled on something simple. I'm happy with how it came out. Feels good to finish a personal piece again. Haven't done one in forever it seems.

Concert Posters

Been working on these projects for the last few weeks. A series of themed illustrations for various chorus groups to use as concert posters. Two holiday and one space theme for the Denver Gay Man's Chorus, the Colorado Springs Men's Chorus, and the Denver Women's Chorus respectively. Had a lot of fun doing these and learned a lot about interacting and collaborating with clients and other designers/artists while working on a project.

Harry and Hedwig

A pen sketch of Harry Potter and his owl, Headwig. I think I will color it and see how it turns out. A fun little sketch though!

Kid with Glasses

Found this kid on "Humans of New York". It's an endless treasure trove of good reference material. His glasses really jumped out to me. I didn't quite capture the roundness of his face. Trying out sketching on a mid-toned paper as well.

Sketching on paper

I haven't been posting frequently as of late because I've been focused on sketching more and trying to improve my drawing ability. Here is a few pages from my sketchbook that I thought I would post in lieu of finished pieces!

Pizza Time

The original idea for this was a monster eating pizza, turned into a fat kid I guess. Something about cartoon pizza is incredibly satisfying...I think it goes back to my Ninja Turtle days. Anyway, I like this guys bumpy tongue and his hands didn't come out terrible so that's a bonus!

Black Eyed Susans

This started as a drawing from life exercise but then turned into a floral pattern of some kind. I think it would make for interesting wallpaper, anyway...a nice change of pace from my usual subject matter.
I warped it for fun, I kind of like it!

Inspired by Wold Cup action. This is a Charicature of Lionel Messi of Argentina, in my opinion the best in the world. I think there is a hint of a likeness there. This was a fun challenge for me.

Mushrooms are always fun to draw! I didn't plan this piece out. It just happened organically while sketching. Those are sometimes the funnest because there is no expectation being placed on yourself to execute an idea or live up to the image in your head. You discover as you go and often the results are better for it.

Pencil stage and inked stage of a 4x4 sketch. Going to add color and lighting in photoshop.

Character Sketch

Character portraits are in my comfort zone, just a sketch I had in my book. A monk or a tribal holy man of some kind.

Biologically Hazardous

"Conducting research into the potentially deadly properties of alien lifeforms, can never be too safe when dealing with unknown substances." This was another sketchbook piece colored in photoshop. Concentrating on creating depth with atmospheric perspective, reducing contrast.

Another Project

An illustration I did for a friend to accompany a short story. Trying to give the composition some dynamic qualities as well as trying to capture the mood of the story through color were fun challenges.

Tournament Poster

A side project I have been working on for the last couple of weeks. A tournament poster for a local Disc Golf course I frequent. It's a different frame of mind when trying to interpret another persons idea for yourself. I found it  a bit challenging to switch gears after doing personal work for so long.

The Picker

This is a digitally colored version of a sketch I posted not long ago. I'm really excited about being about to make line art and then color it digitally like this. So many possibilities. Used a Multiply layer to preserve the line quality. I'm going to have fun bringing my sketches to life this way.

Screaming Pillars

Another ink drawing. Some of the Screaming Pillars from Donkey Kong Country Returns. More Stone basically. Coloring these traditionally hasn't been going so well. I need to experiment with digital coloring, or just letting them stand alone as black and white drawings, nothing wrong with that either.

Hot Spring

Another rock giant. This time a volcano dweller, just hangin' out. I might do a couple more of these types of creatures in different environments...I'm into drawing stone right now for some reason. Getting more familiar with my new brush pen. I like it a lot.

Old Habits

One of my favorites from that same sketchbook. He has personality, and I enjoy his high waisted pants.

Sketch Collage

Some random sketches from my fall/winter 2013 sketchbook

Gentle Giant Process

From Pencil drawing to inked and colored. This was my process. Lots of cross-hatching. I have fun doing it and a creature made out of rock lends itself to the straight lines and planes that the hatching creates. I went through a bunch of iterations of this idea, this was my first and simplest. I like the way it turned out for the most part.

Feral Pika

A sketch done with brush pen, then colored in photoshop. Experimenting a bit with combining traditional and digital techniques. Also just looking for excuses to use my scanner.

I finally have a scanner!

I finally have a scanner! Now I can post some stuff from my sketchbooks. Pretty excited, being able to scan things into photoshop is going to be a huge help. This is a cut up of a few different pages from my most recent sketchbook. I use Pigma Microns and Pilot brush pens for ink.

Jellyfish comic pages

Ive been wanting to illustrate a story for a long time. Here is a couple WIP pages from one I have been working on recently. This is my first attempt at visual storytelling. Its a learning process but its fun to think that way, in terms of a sequence of images rather than just a single stand alone painting or drawing.

Monday, April 7, 2014

Been messing around with a story idea for a little bit, inspired by an earlier jelly fish image i had posted. Decided to rough it out and see if that got the wheels turning. I think it will be fun to draw. Looking forward to taking it further.

More Reference Practice

Did a couple more paintings from photo ref.  Using personal photos or photos from friends now for reference. These are a lot of fun. Top:1-2 hours. Bottom, 45 mins (photo taken by Jason Deutsch)
